Whether it’s after a busy day or during a leisurely weekend, sitting down to a delicious meal at home is always a treat.

There are so many meals to choose from, with the nation's favourite dish a hotly contested debate here in the UK. To bring you some dinnertime inspiration, we have looked at a few of the country’s most popular meals and revealed which enduring favourite takes the top spot!

Top of the pops for meals!

The list of the most popular meals enjoyed across the country contains some expected yet varied choices. It includes traditional British dishes, as well as dishes that originated elsewhere but have become established on UK menus and dinner tables.

The dishes selected have a few things in common, namely that they are all delicious! Before we reveal the nation’s top choice, here is a rundown of a few other meals we all know and love:

Fish and Chips: Possibly the only surprising thing about this classic meal’s inclusion on the list is that it does not take the top slot! After all, you can never go wrong with crispy battered fish, a generous pile of tasty chips (with or without vinegar!) and those all-important garden or mushy peas.

Spaghetti Bolognese: Italian in origin but a long-time favourite in the UK, this delectable pasta-based dish is great for a night in. The combination of simple spaghetti cooked “al dente” and succulent beef mince in a rich tomato and herb Bolognese sauce is sure to be a hit.

Chicken Curry: A catch-all term that really covers a variety of dishes, flavours and cooking styles, the curry has long enjoyed a place on dinner tables across the UK. Served with fluffy rice and the accompaniments of your choice, a creamy korma, spiced tikka masala or fiery vindaloo is always a winner.

Beef Lasagne: Another popular Italian dish that Brits love to serve at mealtimes. Prepared with soft egg pasta layered with a rich beef ragu, smooth béchamel sauce and moreish melted cheese, this is a satisfying option which is guaranteed to put a smile on everyone’s face.

Shepherd’s Pie: Particularly great for a chilly autumn or winter evening, this traditional dish is a simple indulgence and maybe the ultimate comfort food to enjoy at home. Similar to the Cottage Pie (which uses beef mince), the Shepherd’s Pie is made with minced lamb and root vegetables, topped with soft mashed potato.

But what is Britain's most popular meal?

So, among all the dishes selected, which one is Great Britain's favourite?

Well, maybe not surprisingly, topping the list of the country’s most popular meals is the good old roast dinner, according to this 2021 survey of 2,000 Brits.

Traditionally served for Sunday lunch, the mouth-watering combination of perfectly roasted meat, crisp and fluffy potatoes, tender vegetables and lashings of rich gravy remains a firm favourite.

Over the years, the classic roast dinner has evolved to become a staple of British cuisine. While the tradition of enjoying a roast dinner, particularly on Sundays, has deep historical roots, it's interesting to note the connections with British history and culture.

For instance, the nickname 'Beefeaters,' commonly known for the Yeomen Warders, the ceremonial guards at the Tower of London, is often thought to reflect the historical importance of beef in British diet and culture.

However, the exact origin of this nickname is subject to debate among historians. Some suggest it might date back to the 17th century, due to the Yeomen Warders' rations at the Tower, which included a daily portion of beef. This anecdotal association with beef highlights the longstanding significance of this meat in the British culinary tradition.

Today, the roast dinner remains an enduring symbol of British culinary heritage. Over the years, additions such as an irresistible Yorkshire pudding and flavourful stuffing have only enhanced the appeal of this enduring favourite, which is no longer confined to Sundays but is enjoyed by Brits throughout the week.

At Harry’s Country Kitchen, you can choose from four delicious options – roast beef, chicken, lamb or turkey, with all meat sourced from our trusted British suppliers.
